The Hiring Process
Applicants undergo a rigorous screening process, including, but not limited to, the following:
· A written examination
· An oral board examination
· A physical agility test
· A test to determine writing and typing ability
The successful applicant is then extended a conditional offer of employment. The conditions of the offer are that the applicant must pass each of the following:
· A rigorous background investigation consisting of personal and professional reference checks, verification of previous employment, neighborhood checks, driving history, credit history, criminal history, drug usage history, verification of education and training, examination and verification of military service, and other areas as deemed necessary.
· Fingerprint checks with the FBI and State Department of Public Safety
· A polygraph examination
· A psychological examination
· A thorough medical examination
· A final interview with the Chief of Police
If the applicant is chosen and has never been certified as a law enforcement officer anywhere in the United States, they are sent to an academy somewhere in the State of Arizona. Our preference is to send cadets to the Western Arizona Law Enforcement Training Academy (WALETA) in Lake Havasu City, but we may use any academy depending on availability. The academy consists of 18 weeks of rigorous physical, classroom and practical training. Upon successful graduation from the academy, cadets are granted certified status. They then enter into a 12-week field training program where they are partnered with a senior officer who has been trained as a Field Training Officer. During this period, they learn to apply what they learned in the academy. If the cadet successfully completes field training, they are then placed on probationary status for one-year.

Our newest officer was officially sworn in during a cermony on 1-19-2010 in front of the Parker Town Council. From left: Parker Mayor Steve Madoneczky, Officer William Lucas, Chief Rod Mendoza and Town Magistrate Michael Newman. Officer Lucas graduated from the Western Arizona Law Enforcement Training Academy on 12-11-2009. He has lived in Parker for over 11 years and is a graduate of Parker High School.
